Daniel L.
Howerton
November 7, 1921 - April 2, 2010
Daniel L. Howerton of Fernley
passed away on April 2, 2010. Dan was born in Thermal, CA to Ralph and Florence
Howerton on November 7, 1921. He was the last surviving of eight children.
Dan had a long and varied career, starting in California farm fields, through
Arizona and Utah mines and eventually into the auto body business where he owned
Danny's Auto Body shop in Gardnerville, NV for 25 years. After retiring from the
auto body business he went to work as a Douglas County deputy sheriff for ten
years before retiring fully to a life of hunting and fishing with family and
friends from British Columbia to Mexico. During his stints at home between
various trips he raised game birds and grew wonderful vegetable gardens.
Dan was a WWII veteran serving on the last combat cruise of the USS Pennsylvania
ending at Okinawa. In addition to his military time, Dan was a founding member
and former Commander of the Douglas County Sheriff's posse. He was their first
member accorded an honorary life membership after his retirement from that
organization.
Dan is survived by his five children and four step children, numerous grand
children and great-grand children and many great friends.
There will a memorial service in Dan's honor at the Northern Nevada Veteran's
Cemetery on Wednesday, April 7, 2010 at 2:00 p.m.
